CDOT Issues Stop Work Order Following Second Crane Accident

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) issued a stop-work order today to Rockrimmon Constructors following a second accident in five weeks in which a crane tipped over during COSMIX construction operations. The stop-work order, effective immediately, affects only the use of that particular type of crane, a 30-ton rough terrain crane, which was involved in both accidents. All other construction equipment and operations are not affected by the order.

No one was injured during the second accident, which occurred shortly after midnight June 2 on the outside shoulder of northbound Interstate 25 between the Woodmen Road and North Academy Boulevard interchanges. In the first accident, Rockrimmon Constructors crane operator Humberto Rodriguez was killed April 24 when the crane he operated tipped over during construction operations.

“I cannot stress how seriously CDOT takes this issue,” said Dave Poling, CDOT’s project manager for COSMIX, the Colorado Springs Metro Interstate Expansion. “Safety during construction, both for construction crews and the traveling public, is of utmost importance to CDOT, and we cannot allow continued operations of this equipment until we are confident that Rockrimmon Constructors has the necessary safeguards and processes in place to ensure safe operations.”

The stop-work order includes a directive for Rockrimmon Constructors to develop a comprehensive Corrective Action Plan.  This plan will need to address changes in the use and operation of the rough-terrain crane and the training of operators necessary to avoid these accidents in the future. Rockrimmon Constructors will not be allowed to use this type of equipment on the COSMIX project until the corrective action plan is completed and has been approved by CDOT. Compared To Other Industries, Construction Tends To Be More Dangerous.

The rate of injury for workers in the construction industry is approximately 60 percent higher than the overall average for all workers.  Recognizing that hazards exist and planning ahead to properly control or eliminate them, helps protect the working men and women of the construction industry and saves businesses time and money.

Construction has the third highest rate of death by injury.

The death rate in the construction industry is about 15.2 deaths per 100,000 workers.  The leading causes of death among construction workers are falls from elevation, motor vehicle crashes, electrocution, machines, and stuck by falling objects.  The only two industries that have a higher death rate include mining and agriculture.
