Construction Worker on Dover Signalization Project injured During Work Zone Incident

Dover - Dover police investigated an incident involving a motorist driving through a construction site, resulting in the injury of an employee working on the downtown Dover Signalization Project. Wounds to the worker were not life threatening. All violations occurring in construction zones are taken seriously and will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

With almost seven out of eighteen intersections completed, the Dover Signalization Project work will continue through 2008. In light of this recent incident, the Department of Transportation (DelDOT) wants to use this opportunity to educate drivers on the importance of utilizing extra caution while driving in or around construction Work Zones.

Work zones are designed to warn motorists of upcoming hazards and provide clear guidance for alternate paths of travel. When entering a work zone, DelDOT advises motorists to pay careful attention to the traffic control devices present. Warning signs will let you know what to expect. Drums or cones will delineate your path of travel. Flag persons will help direct you along the way.

When work zones are encountered, drivers must pay attention not only for their own safety but for the safety of the workers too. Nationally, one work zone fatality occurs every seven hours, while injuries occur every 15 minutes. Interesting enough, four out of five work zone fatalities are motorists and passengers.

Safety recommendations include:

  • Slowing down
  • Paying attention to work zone signs
  • Watching for construction workers and equipment, keeping a safe distance between your vehicle and them
  • Staying alert and minimizing distractions
  • Being patient and staying calm
  • Monitoring radio, television and websites for local traffic information
  • Scheduling enough time to drive safely
  • Using caution at all times

Safety is a two-way street. Help keep us safe, to keep you safe; slow down, be alert, stay focused, and expect the unexpected.

Compared To Other Industries, Construction Tends To Be More Dangerous.

The rate of injury for workers in the construction industry is approximately 60 percent higher than the overall average for all workers.  Recognizing that hazards exist and planning ahead to properly control or eliminate them, helps protect the working men and women of the construction industry and saves businesses time and money.

Construction has the third highest rate of death by injury.

The death rate in the construction industry is about 15.2 deaths per 100,000 workers.  The leading causes of death among construction workers are falls from elevation, motor vehicle crashes, electrocution, machines, and stuck by falling objects.  The only two industries that have a higher death rate include mining and agriculture.
