Worker Injured At Downtown Las Vegas Construction Site

A construction worker on the 23rd floor of a downtown high-rise construction site was injured when a gust of wind lifted a wood form and knocked the worker over Wednesday afternoon. Preliminary reports indicated that there was a building collapse, but the building did not have any damage. The worker was taken to the UMC Trauma Unit.

Fire dispatchers were notified at 2:09 p.m. of the possible building collapse at the Streamline Towers on the corner of Ogden Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard. When firefighters arrived, they went to the 23rd floor of the 25-story condo project under construction. They found one of the workers with two leg injuries. He was put into a medical basket, treated by paramedics on the 23rd floor and brought down by a crane that was already on the job site to a waiting fire department ambulance. He was taken to the UMC Trauma Unit with two possible leg fractures.

Frank Martin, president of Martin-Harris Construction, told fire officials that workers were in the process of being evacuated from the job site because of gusty winds. The injured worker was one of the last ones to leave the 23rd floor when the wind pushed the wood form over onto his legs. No other workers were injured.

The incident is being investigated by company safety officials. The company said that OSHA would be notified, which is standard procedure after a construction injury accident.

Compared To Other Industries, Construction Tends To Be More Dangerous.

The rate of injury for workers in the construction industry is approximately 60 percent higher than the overall average for all workers.  Recognizing that hazards exist and planning ahead to properly control or eliminate them, helps protect the working men and women of the construction industry and saves businesses time and money.

Construction has the third highest rate of death by injury.

The death rate in the construction industry is about 15.2 deaths per 100,000 workers.  The leading causes of death among construction workers are falls from elevation, motor vehicle crashes, electrocution, machines, and stuck by falling objects.  The only two industries that have a higher death rate include mining and agriculture.
